The E07K (dubbed ‘Andes’) is a portable headphone amplifier and DAC from FiiO, whose similar E17 amp earned a solid 9/10 in our review last year. It’s designed to pump top-drawer sound quality into the ears of audio enthusiasts using high-end headphones, and can be used as a high-quality sound card for a PC, or with a portable media player. It’s an upgraded version of the FiiO E7, adding a few new features that we’ll touch upon throughout the review.

The amplifier docking concept introduced in the Fiio E9-E7 pairing has been re-introduced as the E7K/E9K combo. Where the E7K received a facelift that makes it a better looking unit than the predecessor, the E9K’s upgrade is more in the functionalities. What’s important to note is that with the updates, come improvements in sound quality.

The legend has returned. The FiiO E7 is one of the world's most famous budget DAC's and headphone amplifier. It skyrocketed FiiO to fame back when it came out. It was, and still is, on the lips of many new head-fi'ers as they come to look for a budget unit for their new setup. The E7 has aged in these last 2-3 years since it has been out, but now in 2012 and early 2013, the legend itself has returned. Updated and just as sleek and beautiful as the original was. I honestly can not think of another company that has been as major a brand of choice for a starter audiophile than FiiO. The E7 and FiiO has created and started more audiophiles than I can count. Let's take a look at it....

Almost three years ago when E7 was introduced, it was one of only two sub-$100 portable amp / DAC options in the market, and it pretty much out-marketed the competition right away. E7 is originally designed to solve the low sound quality issue related to nettop and netbook due to their miniature size. But with the decline of these tiny PC, E7 becomes lesser relevant and begin to show its shortcoming, especially its lacks on driving power when user are adapting it for other usage beyond just nettop and netbook. E07K is basically FiiO’s answer to bring E7 up-to-date while still maintaining the same low price at $89

Earlier in the year FiiO upgraded the E9 with the E09k and it mostly took into account newer trends in portable or fixed small desktop audio as well as feedback from FiiO fans and owners so when they announced the E07k or the Andes I had a feeling this was a similar undertaking with the upgrading of the portable amp/dac E7. The E7 has been one of the most popular units ever released by FiiO and in many respects allowed them to forge a reputation with their fans for quality on a budget and give them the confidence to run with a lot of other concepts which have become successful edition such as the E11....
